Hatching Chicken Eggs

Is it possible to hatch an egg bought from a grocery store? The answer is not possible as most eggs  sold commercially  have not been fertilized.

Fertile eggs are those that contain both ova and sperm which means that we need a male rooster for that.

10 to 12 hens per rooster is a good ratio.

Fertilized eggs can be hatched either artificially through an incubator or naturally through a brooder hen.

Genereal Rules to know in hatching Eggs

  • Hatching Chicken Eggs Takes 21 Days
  • Turning the egg several 3-5 times a day until day 18 is important to prevent the embryo from sticking to the shell membranes.
  • Keep the eggs warm.
    • Eggs should be kept at a still-air temperature of 101.5°F, measured at the top of the egg. If your egg incubator uses forced air keep the temperature at 99.5°F.
    • If you have a broody hen incubating your eggs you really don’t need to worry about this.
  • Pipping‘ is when the chick begins to break through the inner membrane and then the shell itself.
    • Some will come out very quickly, using their egg tooth. The others sometimes take more than 24 hours.
  • Let the Chick Come Out of the Shell on Her Own

    • The key to hatching eggs successfully is to leave them alone as much as possible.
